A while back I loved the idea of a magizine rack style kids bookshelf that I saw in a Pottery Barn magazine, BUT of course I didn't want to spend money on something I could create for pennies so whalaaaaaa! I made a box with some old bunkie boards sitting in my garage, and slapped a scrap piece of bead board on the back. I wanted a rustic throw together look so I used grabber screws to put it together and didn't hide them.
So to get the layered paint look I wiped some black paint on the edges (knowing that when I sanded at the end the black would show through the top layer of paint). Then I painted a robin's egg blue over everything, but the beadboard, which I painted white. Then a quick once over which my favorite orbital sander to make it look old. Finally a coat of spray on clear coat and after it dried I screwed it right to the wall. . . obviously aiming for studs that I found with my stud finder.
